Overview

Iridium Wire is a special metal wire made of high-purity iridium (Ir). Due to its excellent high-temperature stability, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, it is widely used in precision industrial fields under extreme environments such as electronic devices, high-temperature furnaces, optical crystal growth, aerospace, and glass manufacturing.

Application

  1. High Purity Uniform Shaped Iridium Wire is not only frequently employed in high-temperature thermocouples and electrode wires, but also serves as a signal transmission wire in high-temperature environments (such as temperature sensor leads in aero-engine applications, requiring stable electrical signal transmission at elevated temperatures).
  2. Iridium wires are the ideal choice for heating elements and support wires in vacuum furnaces (such as single crystal growth furnaces in the semiconductor industry, which require high vacuum and impurity-free environments), as well as for high-temperature component wires in spacecraft (such as precision wires for satellite attitude control systems).
  3. Pure Iridium Wire is suitable for conductive and connecting wires in precision instruments (such as internal leads for high-end sensors and microelectronic devices requiring both strength and conductivity), and for precision wires in medical implants (such as electrode wires for pacemakers, which must maintain structural stability long-term within the body without reacting with human tissue).
  4. Ir Wire serves as corrosion-resistant electrode wire in chemical processing (e.g., precision electrodes for electrolytic cells and electroplating tanks), wire materials for handling radioactive substances in nuclear applications, and stirring shaft wire for molten glass in glass manufacturing (preventing corrosion and contamination by high-temperature glass melt).

Process

① Through reduction reactions, purified iridium compounds are converted into metallic iridium, yielding high-purity iridium metal exceeding 99.9% purity.

② Melting is conducted under vacuum or inert gas protection, followed by cooling and shaping within specialised moulds to form cylindrical or cubic iridium ingots.

③ Typically requiring 10–20 drawing passes, the ingots are progressively drawn into fine wires of the required diameter. Annealing is performed after each drawing pass to enhance ductility.

④ Upon completion of drawing, the wire surface undergoes meticulous polishing to ensure smoothness and freedom from scratches, meeting high-precision application requirements.

⑤ Comprehensive quality inspection, dimensional accuracy testing, visual inspection, and performance assessments, including tensile strength, resistivity, and corrosion resistance, ensure product compliance with standards.

⑥ Sealed packaging in a dry environment prevents oxidation and moisture ingress, safeguarding product quality and storage stability.
